Policy Campaigns
The Chamber is fighting for our members across four critical campaigns. These are economy; skills & employability; transport and Police and Crime Commissioners
Transport
Whether it’s delayed trains, traffic jams or having to change flights in Dubai to reach China transport affects each and every business in the UK on a daily basis. Transport has always been vital to the success of any economy and is even more important in the 21st Century. Easy access to new and existing markets drives growth and creates jobs by widening the pool of customers; suppliers and workers available to a local economy. As such Transport is a key issue to the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group. For more information on the Chamber’s transport campaign click

Skills & Employability
A skilled workforce is fundamental to every successful business in the UK, and developing the capability of our workforce is crucial for economic growth and international competitiveness. Our members recognise the importance of investing in skills and training, even when times are financially hard. A lack of appropriate skills within the labour pool is limiting business growth but more recently our members cite ‘aptitude’ and ‘attitude’ as essential for young people entering the workforce for the first time. With these attributes in place, most members state that they can train individuals with the skills necessary for business growth and development. It is therefore our aim as a Chamber Group to engage more widely with schools, colleges and further and higher education institutions to help make the workforce of the future work-ready. Economy & Quarterly Economic Survey (QES)
Developments in recent years have placed the economy firmly back on the agenda. Stable rates of inflation, a benign world economy and steady growth led many to take the economy for granted. The credit crunch and ensuing recession created an incredibly difficult environment for business to operate within. The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group and the wider Chamber network are committed to ensuring that the needs of business are at the front of decision makers’ minds when setting policy.
Through our vocal and highly regarded advocacy work the Chamber network is the first port of call for the Government when trying to understand the wider implications of legislation. Our successes are clear; despite a fragile economy the Coalition government has recognised the importance of reducing corporation tax and scrapping damaging regulatory burdens and employment law. However our work is not done and with regulation and red tape costing the economy several billions of pounds per annum we are committed to representing our members views and ensuring that they can create the jobs and growth that we need. Police and Crime Commissioners
On the 15th November 2012 the first ever Police and Crime Commissioner Elections took place. In each police force area across England and Wales (excluding London) a democratically elected PCC replaced the former Local Police Authorities, gaining significant control over the policing priorities and budget of their police force area. How their Police Force operates and how it allocates its budget is of crucial importance to businesses. Whether its encountering crimes against business, supplying equipment and services to the police force or receiving Community Safety Grants, many businesses and social enterprises rely on the Police Force for security, both against crime and economically. At the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Group we are working hard to ensure that the needs of businesses in our region are not forgotten by the elected West Midlands PCC.
