Myths and Facts

A number of myths have developed throughout some workplaces that suggest that older workers are less affective or productive within the workplace, are more prone to absence and don’t like being at work. It is also generally considered that younger employees do not suffer from age discrimination.

This section explains the real facts. According to the Employers Forum on Age (EFA), in the UK:

The older you are, the happier you are:


People in their sixties are the happiest;


More sixtysomethings are happy to work until they are 70 than any other group;


Nearly a third of people overall are happy to work until they're 70;


Young people are the most restless within the workplace;

 
Teenagers are the most likely to have been put off applying for a job because of their age;


More teenagers than fiftysomethings are put off applying for a job because of their age;


More than one in ten people dread retirement;


Nearly a third of sixtysomethings believe you can't work as well when you get older;


Women are more likely to say they have been put off applying for a job because of their age than men.
