Businesswomen make the right moves

If the economic mire gets any worse, then one set of businesswomen may well be looking for an alternative career – in Bollywood!

The businesswomen from Birmingham’s well-heeled business community are to take lessons in Bollywood dancing for beginners.

The workshop is the centrepiece of the annual ‘Women Who’ garden party organised by Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The event to include a Bollywood workshop run by Selly Oak-based Chitraleka Dance Company will be held at New Hall Hotel, Sutton Coldfield, on 17 June.

The dance company was formed in 1990 by Chitraleka Bolar, and specialises in teaching South Asian dancing. Dancing features in many Bollywood productions, which are mostly musicals featuring catchy song and dance numbers.

Bollywood – based in Mumbai – long ago overtook Hollywood as the world’s largest film producer, and now regularly influences Western productions, one famous example being ‘Moulin Rouge’.

Birmingham Chamber events director Henrik Court said: “We’re not seriously expecting any of our Birmingham business ladies to take up a career in Bollywood, although as an industry it does attract thousands of artistes.

“But you never know – if Cameron and Clegg can’t save the economy, we might all be looking to forge a new career somewhere!”

Making the right moves are left Jyoti Parwana, Chitraleka Dance Company; Serena Patel, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce; Anaya Bolar and Sulhash Gorania, Chitraleka Dance Company.
